home 'Is the Ivory Tower an Iron Cage? Redesigning Doctoral Education in the Humanities'

What:
PhD students in the humanities face numerous challenges upon entering a degree program, including amassing crippling student debt, facing ever-shrinking tenure-track job opportunities, and battling a perceived loss of relevance. Yet this crisis, argues Russell Berman, offers an opportunity to rethink the PhD degree, making it more affordable, accessible and relevant than before. Russell Berman is the Walter A. Haas Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Comparative Literature and German Studies at Stanford University.
