Avila University presents the Harry Truman Lecture Series featuring World War II prisoner of war and Olympic runner Louie Zamperini
- This event is free and open to the public. Veterans are especially welcome and will be honored and recognized. Events begin with an hour-long panel presentation featuring Ray Gesselbracht, special assistant to the director of the Truman Library, WWII vetaran Carl Freeman and U.S. Marine Capt. Jim Pippen, retired. Following at 5 p.m., Louie Zamperini, WWII prisoner of war and former American Olympic distance runner, will share his story via live video conference of survival, resilience and redemption as reflected in Laura Hillenbrand's bestselling book, Unbroken. The book has spent nearly 100 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and Zamperini has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Avila President Ron Slepitza, Ph.D., and the University Singers also will be featured.
