- Twenty Films Essential to Cinema LiteracyThink you’re film literate? Not until you’ve experienced the masterpieces of world cinema presented as part of this new series. Former Kansas City Star film critic Robert W. Butler (now a member of the Library’s Public Affairs staff) provides opening and closing remarks.Depression-era movie goers wanted escapism, laughs, and romance. Thus the popularity of screwball comedy. This rollicking genre offered rapid-fire dialogue, farcical situations, a big dash of slapstick, and often cross dressing. Bringing Up Baby has all of those, plus Cary Grant as a befuddled paleontologist and Katharine Hepburn as a ditzy heiress who is dangling in front of him the promise of a big contribution. The Baby of the title, by the way, is Hepburn’s pet leopard. Behind the camera is Howard Hawks, a man as comfortable with madcap silliness (His Girl Friday, Monkey Business) as with Westerns (Red River, Rio Bravo), film noir (The Big Sleep), gangster movies (Scarface), science fiction (The Thing From Another World) and real-life hagiography (Sergeant York).SUNDAYS at 1:30 p.m.September 2, 2012Citizen Kane (1941: NR)September 16, 2012The General (1926: NR)September 30, 2012The Seventh Seal (1957: NR)October 14, 2012Rashomon (1950: NR)October 28, 2012Nosferatu (1922: NR)November 4, 2012Raging Bull (1980: R)November 18, 2012The Bicycle Thieves (1948: NR)December 2, 2012The Manchurian Candidate (1962: NR)December 9, 2012Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1939: NR)January 6, 2013The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928: NR)January 13, 2013My Darling Clementine (1946: NR)January 27, 2013Bringing Up Baby (1938: NR)February 10, 2013All About Eve (1950: NR)February 24, 2013Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964: NR)March 10, 2013The Circus (1928: NR)March 24, 2013Rear Window (1954: NR)April 7, 2013Wings of Desire (1987: PG-13)April 21, 2013Singin’ in the Rain (1952: NR)May 5, 2013Sunset Boulevard (1950: NR)May 19, 2013Metropolis (1927: NR)
