- Kaw Prairie Community Church will host Christmas services in a make-shift barn setting at the church. The service will include traditional Christmas music and a family-oriented play complete with live animals and hay bale seating (as well as comfortable chairs). This year's play, “Back to the Manger,” centers on that famous but enigmatic carpenter named Joseph. Stunned by the news of his fiancée Mary’s pregnancy, he’ll need a little extra convincing to stand by her as the adoptive father of her very special baby boy. To his surprise, that extra convincing will take the form of an angel who drives a DeLorean and answers to “Doc!” Join them on a journey through time as Doc tries to convince Joseph to trust God and follow His plan. “Every year, visitors of all ages seem to really enjoy this special service,” said Pastor Dan McKnight of Kaw Prairie Community Church. “The service starts off playful and kid-friendly but morphs into something very serious and holy. It’s a nice balance of family fun and family memories. Like much of what we do, it’s casual on the outside, serious on the inside.” From 2004-2009, Kaw Prairie’s Christmas services had been held in the 100-year-old barn at Zimmerman’s Kill Creek Farm, a beloved community gathering place, in DeSoto, Kan. However, the barn was destroyed in a micro burst in 2010, forcing the last two years of Christmas services to be moved to the church building where they will be held each year until the barn is rebuilt. Donations received again at this year’s services will go toward the rebuilding effort. For more information, visit www.kawprairie.org/Christmas, find us on Facebook or call 913-764-KPCC. Kaw Prairie Church, with its motto of “Casual on the outside, serious on the inside,” is an inter-denominational church whose mission is to change lives with Jesus’ love. Regular services are held Sundays at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. at Kaw Prairie Community Church, 9421 Meadowview Dr., Lenexa, KS 66227. www.kawprairie.org
